How it works
How a point spread wager settles
A point spread adjusts the final score to create a handicap. Add the selected team’s spread to its final score and compare the adjusted score with the opponent’s score. A higher adjusted score is a win, an equal score is a push, and a lower score is a loss.
If a team wins 24–20 and was favored by -3.5, its adjusted margin is 0.5 and the spread bet wins. At -4, the adjusted margin is zero and the wager pushes, subject to the sportsbook’s rules.
Calculate spread bet payout
For a winning wager, American odds determine net profit and the original stake is returned. A losing wager loses the stake. A push generally returns the stake. Enter the favorite’s spread as a negative number and the underdog’s as a positive number.
Alternative spreads may use different prices for the same matchup. Calculate each ticket using the actual line and odds on the bet slip.
Half-point lines and pushes
Half-point spreads avoid pushes on a standard final score, while whole-number spreads can push when the adjusted scores tie. Quarter-point Asian lines split the stake into two neighboring lines and need separate settlement math. This calculator covers a single spread line.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a point spread bet?
Add the selected team’s spread to its score, then compare that adjusted score with the opponent’s. A win, tie, or loss determines the settlement.
What happens when a spread bet pushes?
On a standard single wager, a push typically returns the stake. Check the sportsbook’s rules for parlays or special markets.
What does -3.5 mean on a point spread?
The favorite must win by at least four points for a -3.5 wager to cover. The half point prevents a tie at exactly three points.
